8 LITTLE ACTS OF BIG SELF LOVE

So, I've been thinking. The rain kinda does that to you. And I've been thinking about me.

I remembered a time in school when a teacher said something to me, which did not make much sense. This actually happened quite often, as we've recently immigrated to New Zealand and my English was a little rugged (nicely put). This time however she said something to me with such a meaningful tone, that I was drawn to jot it down, knowing that one day I will make sense of it.

The words were "Don't be so hard on yourself".

Since then I have quite possibly heard the very same words at least a hundred times and I can no longer even be sure if the majority of times they came from others… or myself.

But the point is that, making great goals and having high standards is not the problem. The problem is not being satisfied with the outcome, not celebrating along the way and not giving yourself enough credit for everything else you’ve achieved and learned while going for gold.

I’m talking a little loooove. Self love.

    Practicing #2

I've come a long way since then. I've also come to a realisation that self-love goes far beyond the ever-so-predictable bubble bath. But then again, none of the below tips are revolutionary either. And they are certainly not difficult. Here are:

8 LITTLE ACTS OF BIG SELF LOVE

    1. Forgive your thoughts. It’s easy to kick yourself or get mad at random thoughts popping into your head during times of meditation, traffic jams or your boss’s annoying voice. Instead of getting irritated, just say “he he, I’m so hilarious, I forgive that thought”.

    2. Take yourself on a date. Yes a ‘real’ date. If it means a lovely restaurant with a view, then go for it. You can’t expect others to love your company if you feel awkward in it yourself, so relax and cherish this time. Remember to catch the guy with the roses for sale "yes please I'd love to buy myself a flower, because I'm awesome like that"!

    3. Carry cash, not cards. Money IS a big deal, whether you can say it out loud or not. Your bank account needs as much love and support from you, as your body and your relationships. However- constantly seeing nothing but credit cards every time you open your wallet screams… debt. So make a habit of taking out enough cash to last you however long, that way you can also keep track of your spending and fill yourself with prosperous thoughts when you touch the money money money- maaa-nay!

    4. Change your greeting. Have you ever thought that the way you greet someone is setting tone to that person’s entire day AND your own? Next time instead of saying ‘Are you keeping busy?’ or ‘Keeping out of trouble?’ or ‘Hi, are you OK?’- ask a question that can only have a positive reply, like ‘how great is your day on a scale of 10 to 20?’ or ‘what’s the best thing about this morning?’

    5. Don’t stinge out on organics. You’ve heard the news- inorganic produce contains little nutrients and loads of pesticides. It may seem, like you are getting all the extra chemicals as a freebie. Hooray- who ever said that nothing’s ever free? Perhaps it was the pesticide muncher with piles of medical bills later in life?

    6. Drink green juice from your best wine glass. Don't wait for a special occasion to use it. Today is the special occasion.

    7. Play a tourist in your own city. I’m not talking galleries and concert gigs. They are all good of course, but nothing compares to the thrills and appreciation of where you belong, like a double-decker bus around the city, guided walking tours, and cartwheels in a “I Heart [fill in your city here]” t-shirt.

    8. Fall asleep counting blessings not sheep. Falling asleep in a state of gratitude is possibly the most therapeutic, healing, generous gesture towards your fabulous life.

Self-love is the greatest gift you can ever give yourself. It is the only gift.

Do you practice self-love? What do you do?

Raw Union Jack Cake for Queen's Diamond Jubilee

'Oopse she did it again!' It was yet another solid year of rocking it out on the throne, this time totalling a great big celebratory SIX ZERO!

Our Queen is an inspiration, so I wanted to do something extra special for her Diamond Jubilee by making her this gorgeous Raw (dah!) Union Jack Cake:

Queen Elizabeth has forgiven us for doing press ups on her garden lawn  a couple of summers ago and absolutely loved the cake! And so did her family below :)

Elliot's parents were visiting us from New Zealand, so we had our very own Royal Party. From left to right: Harry- that'll be moi; Prince Charles- Elliot; Duke of Edinburgh- Richard (dad); The Queen- Adele (mum); William- Matt; Kate- Jen.

    And back to the cake.
Here are the step by step instructions to make your very own...

    RAW FOOD UNION JACK CAKE

    For the base
2 portions of my Fudge Brownie recipe (base only, no icing)

    For the icing
    2 Cups cashews, soaked overnight
    2 Lemons, juiced
1/2 Cup extra virgin coconut oil
    1/3 Cup agave nectar
1/4 Beetroot juice (about 1 medium beet; make like this if no juicer)
    1 tsp Spirulina powder

    For the equipment & extras
    Blueberries
    Raspberries
    Desiccated coconut
Union Jack stensil (or purchased flag)
    Blender
    Food processor
    Optional: 17 x 31 cm cake base

Blend the cashews, lemon juice, coconut oil and agave, using a tamper/pulse until creamy.
Scoop about a third into a separate bowl to keep for the white portion of icing.
Add beetroot juice to the blender and blend (or manually stir, like in the image below)
Scoop half out to another bowl to keep for the red portion of icing.
Add the spirulina to the remaining red mixture and blend to make a purplish colour for the 'blue' portion of icing.

Prepare the brownie mixture using my Raw Food Fudge Brownie base recipe.
Double the portion, or your cake will be far too thin.
I used a 17 x 31 cm granite serving plate, but you can use a small chopping board or just a plate.

Make yourself a Union Jack stencil.
If you are in UK- just buy a cheap plastic flag available in many convenience stores.
Using the blunt side of a knife- press into each line to imprint the flag design onto the cake.

When you take the flag away, check that all the lines are there.
It's easy to get some out of proportion, so just smooth the line or two out with your finger and redo.

Begin to frost by colouring in the white parts first.
Use a butter knife like a painting brush and don't rush.
Continue by colouring in with red, keeping a picture of a Union Jack near for reference.

Continue now by filling the remaining triangles with the purple frosting.
[Blue is a primary colour, so it is pretty tricky to create from scratch. Purple was my best outcome]
Use the very tip of your knife to create sharp corners with the colours.

If you are not using berries- your cake is now ready!
    Keep it in the fridge.

I just looooove berries and think they make any dessert extra special, so I used raspberries and blueberries for the respective colours on the flag.
The raspberries were a bit big, so I set them into the middle red cross part only.

Be sure to use the smallest blueberries first for each corner of the blue flag part.
Take a pinch of desiccated coconut and very carefully sprinkle it over the white.
Tada! Store in the fridge for up to 7 days.

So, what do you think? Do you love it too? I'd so love for you to share your version of a Raw Food Queen's Diamond Jubilee creation with me on Facebook- just tag Better Raw or post on our page

Better Raw has a new look!

Drum rollllll! Excitement! Happy dance! Sigh of relief! Overwhelming joy! So so much gratitude.

It is my with my greatest pleasure that I announce to you the release of a new and improved Better Raw website!

From dreaming about the day I change my beloved (but standard) blog template to many discussions with a lot of you over building an entirely new website vs keeping the blog, the general consensus was 'DEFINITELY keep the blog without question' (apparently).

So the blog stays. The look and interaction changes.

    I wanted to...

    1. Create a more modern, fresh and colourful look to represent how much raw food has transformed me and those around me. I see this incredible energy every day, so it was a must for it to be reflected in a brighter and cleaner setting. And...

    2. Create a platform and a resource type centre for all of you guys, where you can turn to for recipes, articles, tips, ideas and recommended products in a one-stop-shop.

    What has changed...

    1. Well first of all- a few things... went. A few old posts, an old page, silly widgets and of course the standard template. Feeling cleansed and de-clutted :)

    2. There is now a search box in the top right corner, where you can enter any keyword for what ever recipe, ingredient or anything else like 'raw food restaurants in London' you may be searching for.

    3. An entirely new store page 'Shopping', where you can find links to where I shop online, my entire product collection, as well as a bunch of others I love, and the list of my recommended kitchen equipment.

    4. A brand new 'inspiration corner'. This is a small space below the search box, where I am going to share my love of quotes and update it with a brand new inspiration every day. If you have a quote you like to see up there, feel free to post it in the comments below.

    5. A post with FAQs on 'Why Raw Food'. I plan to refresh and update this post, adding new answers to your questions, so do feel free to ask them in the comments and please forward that page to your friends!

    6. A much more clear, beautiful and professionally designed image links on the right. All the design work you see is thanks to a truly incredible woman called Natasha Bu. Please keep reading, I'd love to tell you about her!

So take a look at how the blog has evolved over the past TWO years...
[Better Raw Blog turned 2 just last week on 16th April 2012 YEY]

    THE LOOK OF 2010

    THE LOOK OF 2011

    THE LOOK OF NOW

And the most important part of all is that I absolutely must tell you about a few truly wonderful people, who didn't just make this website happen but quite literally changed my life...

Samjhana Moon of Goddess Portraiture for the awesome photoshoot I had with you last year! All thanks to you- my DVD Raw Food 101 has a cover, my social networks have an avatar and this website now has a face!

Tristan Glinski of Apix Photography, who attended our Lush Escapes retreat and skilfully captured purely magic moments, some of which you can see in the images to the right and many of which will be getting released shortly as we announce the upcoming retreat.

Alys Rowe of Alys Rowe Photography for taking some stunning pictures of my raw food Christmas recipes and making Festive the most exciting eBook I've ever released!

You You You! I feel like I'm doing an acceptance speech here, so just roll with it... But I do, really do want, need, must thank YOU for reading and returning to this blog in order to make me want to update it in the first place. Love you!!!

Right, at last but nowhere near least... the gorgeous, the hard working, incredibly talented, kind, and loving mother to a little boy... the woman who is responsible for all the design work you see here from banner to background to side widgets, is Natasha Bu. Natasha also designed the entire cover of my DVD Raw Food 101! I am so beyond grateful for all your devoted energy, thank you!

Natasha just announced to me that she will work for barter! If you have some design work- whether it's an eBook cover and contents, branding, logos, photograph refining, website banner and widget design or anything that involves creativity, beauty and talent- she will do an exchange for a service or product you provide. Can this girl get any more amazing??

Actually... she does. Just take a look at some of her recent artwork...

Tell me what you think of Better Raw's new look in the comments below. I would sooooo love your opinion and after all the hard work, I am sure Natasha Bu would too....

Determine your pH levels at home (How Acid or Alkaline are you? Video)

Over the Easter break my inbox has been getting quite a workout with questions, so I decided to make a little video, which should answer the most common of them all for you...

    http://youtu.be/-nRT96yfGmQ

In this short video, you will learn:

What the consequences are when your blood is too acid
What the exact pH level is required for pure health
Three ways to determine whether you are acidic or alkaline without any tests
How to measure your pH levels at home
What are some of the goodies included in the upcoming course

    Lots of love
    xTanya

PS The most common question I'm getting asked is 'Is the program open to us living outside of the UK?' and my answer is a big giant alkaline 'YES OF COURSE'! It may be the middle of the night for you or the middle of a work day, but I would love to offer all this information to you no matter where you live, so we'll be recording every call! Three course raw food dinner experience (feat. superfood crackers)

    Hey everyone and Happy Monday!

I woke up this morning with a really really good feeling, every cell in my body full of electricity and sparkles, butterflies and cacao. I even got my skipping rope out and skipped in my PJ's in our back yard. Weird is my middle name!

I just feel this week is going to be AMAZING and if it's not, I'm going to MAKE IT amazing! No idea why I feel like that, but does it even matter? Don't question happiness, just roll with it.

Perhaps it's because of the awesome food and company we had this weekend? Speaking of which... I wanted to share with you a Three Course Raw Food Dinner idea, as I often get asked what to make for guests. These last few days we had Elliot's sister-in-law Jen visiting us, so I organised a wee little dinner party to welcome her to London Town.

Britney and Jen with kombucha mimosas

It was also a good excuse for me to come up with a brand new cracker recipe. I do love my special Chia Seed and Sun-dried Tomato crackers (even Girl on Raw's Robyn Law blogged about them), but sometimes change is on the cards. I'm glad it is, the new creations are definitely worthy of the blog- so smooth, crisp and crunchy with a superfood bite!

Scroll for the recipe and check out what we ate:

    THREE COURSE DINNER MENU

    Drink- Kombucha mimosa

    Starter- Superfood Crackers and Guacamole
(recipe for crackers and guacamole below)

Main- Raw Food Luxury Pizza with Probiotic Cheese and Sauerkraut
(pizza as seen here, cheese and sauerkraut as seen here)

    Dessert- Refreshing Peppermint Ice Cream

    SUPERFOOD CRACKER RECIPE

    Spread as thinly as possible

    For the essentials
    Blender
    Dehydrator
    Teflex sheets

    For the crackers
1 cup buckwheat groats, soaked 2 hours
1 cup sunflower seeds, soaked 2 hours
    1 cup chopped pineapple
    1/2 cup sundried tomatoes
    1 large courgette/ zucchini, chopped
    2 tsp himalayan salt
    1 tsp chlorella powder
    1/2 tsp cumin
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    1/4 garlic powder

Pizza bases and crackers onto mesh after 8 hours
Rinse the buckwheat well. It will need a few washes to get the gooey water thinned out.
Pour out the water from sunflower seeds or better yet- feed it to your house plants.
Put all the ingredients, including the seeds into a blender and blend to a paste.
Divide the mixture in half and spread over two teflex sheets of your dehydrator. Spread it with a soft spatular, until really thin.
Dehydrate at 115 degrees F for 8 hours, turn over onto mesh trays and peel away the teflex sheets.
Return to the dehydrator and dehydrate for another 10-12 hours.
Cut off the rough edges and into equal sized crackers.
Keep in an airtight container, serve with fresh guacamole (mashed avocado, chopped tomato, chopped onion and lemon juice).

Here we are, so relaxed we didn't even make it to the dinner table:
    Elliot, Britney, Jen, me (Tanya)
