a surprising way to immunise naturally | by joanna scott-lutyens

a surprising way to immunise naturally | by joanna scott-lutyens

(A guest post by Joanna Scott-Lutyens of NutriEssence)

When you feel that dreaded scratchy throat, vice-like headache or sudden endless sneezing, you know it is typically the onset of a cold or flu. Although guzzling a bunch of vitamin C might seem like the best way to boost your immune system at this time this rarely has the effect of changing the course of the illness, which often leads you to submit to it with a sigh of resignation. You might even reach for cold and flu tablets to ease the symptoms knowing that it will be a battle with every day life for a few days or weeks and you can use all the help you can get.

But what if these symptoms didn’t make a cold or flu inevitable? What if there was another way to support your immune system that didn’t require eating a bag of oranges every day? Would you be interested to find out more?

I’d like to introduce you to your glorious gut bacteria!

Your gut and immunity are in fact inextricably linked. About 70% of your immune system is actually based in your digestive system, and the gut mucosa connects with a large collection of immune cells in the body. These come from what is known as the lymphoid system and are bundles of cells known as Peyer’s patches which work to protect the membranes of the small intestine from infections. They do this by releasing white blood cells known as T cells and B cells to defend from infection. These protect the gut from infection but they also migrate through to the lymphatic system preparing the whole body for an immune attack against a pathogen.

Although your digestive system’s main role is to digest and absorb your food it also has a major role in defence. Have you ever considered that your gut is actually on the outside of your body? If you think about it you are actually open from top to bottom (literally) making your digestive system very vulnerable to attack from the outside.

Other than the specialized immune cells, our friendly bacteria are absolutely vital to protecting our gut walls. When we take probiotics they travel to our gut and adhere to the gut wall and grow in numbers. These little bacteria are like soldiers protecting their fort wall and stopping any pathogen or infections from being absorbed into our blood stream. Sometimes called the ‘barrier effect’, this is a huge part of our immune system, and one we don’t really think of.

As well as this is the nutritional side of immunity. More and more of us are becoming increasingly aware of how important our food is. That is fantastic news, but in order to optimise the use of these wonderful nutrients we need to be absorbing them. The correct function of the gut wall is vital for overall digestion and absorption of foods and again probiotics have a fundamental role in this. Optimised absorption of nutrients is essential for a strong immunity (you can check out the research here).

So all of this sounds wonderful but is there any clinical evidence for this? The answer is yes. One meta-analysis1 found that the average duration of winter illness, and the number of days spent absent from work, were significantly reduced by taking a probiotic, compared to placebo.

Another trial2 looked at immune function in professional rugby players. It was found that the group of players who took a probiotic suffered approximately 40% fewer colds and gastrointestinal infections compared to those who didn’t.

So there are several studies highlighting the value of probiotics for keeping our cold and flu tablet bill down but how do we know which ones to buy? Well, the strain of the probiotic is very important. Different probiotics have different characteristics and are particularly beneficial for different things. In-vitro trials3 to investigate which probiotic strains were especially effective at combating food-borne bugs, found the strains L. acidiphilus UBLA-34 and B. longum UBBL-64 had excellent ability to inhibit Listeria, Yersina as well as a good ability to inhibit E. Coli and Salmonella. These strains of probiotic can be found in OptiBac Probiotics ‘For daily immunity’ (my preferred probiotic).

In another studywhich was run in the winter season, 326 children were randomly given a placebo or the probiotic strains Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM® in combination with Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07. Their immunity was monitored and it was concluded that these strains in combination were an effective way to reduce colds, coughs and fever as well as time off school in children between children aged 3-5. These strains can be found in OptiBac Probiotics ‘For every day EXTRA Strength’ which is also a good probiotic for support with more challenging digestive issues.

Want more confirmation that gut bacteria influence your immunity? Remember the last time you were stressed for a while? Did you come down with a cough or a virus you just couldn’t shake off? Stress is known to wreck havoc with gut bacteria, destroying the delicate balance of your microbiota and can be seen in how stress affects your ability to stave off bugs. Some people often get an upset tummy just before they come down with a cold or flu; another indicator that your gut is linked to your health. Antibiotics are also known to destroy not just bad bacteria but healthy bacteria too. It therefore follows that people often suffer from a bout of ill health following a course of antibiotics, again because the gut microbiota, and therefore the immune system is being compromised. These connections again underlie how inextricably connected your gut and immunity is, and therefore the importance of this surprising way to boost your immunity naturally.

It’s never too late to start looking after yourself with these little bacteria.

Master of The Month | Nadine Artemis | Chocolate Blueberry Crepes Recipe

It’s hard to believe that just one year ago I was packing my bags for LA to attend The Longevity Now Conference and today one of my favourite speakers from it is here on the blog with us.

Nadine Artemis of Living Libations is not just an encyclopaedia of knowledge on natural dental and pure botanical beauty care, she is one of the sweetest, most authentic and truly caring humans leading the health scene today. And to prove my point, she saw I posted THISon Facebook after hearing her speak and sent me a whole selection of her exquisite line of serums, elixirs and essential oils as a thank you. I mean, seriously what a woman!

With her home nestled in the Canadian woods, and a business that is all about how to glow from what grows, Nadine has made living with nature a priority in her life. She is also the author of Holistic Dental Care: The Complete Guide to Healthy Teeth and Gums.

Described by Alanis Morissette as “a true-sense visionary,” I am so excited for you to meet our March Master of the Month…

    Nadine Artemis Bio Photo 2014

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY OF EATING AND DRINKING.

We eat what is fresh and seasonal, so our meals are vast and varied but always whole, organic and wild. Our meals are gluten free and processed food free. We live on a beautiful cold, spring-fed lake with many springs in the area. Spring water is the best.

WHAT (OR WHO) INSPIRES YOU TO EAT WELL AND STAY HEALTHY?

My body inspires my health.  We, (me and my body), are going to be hanging out together for many years, so I listen and align to my body’s wisdom.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST WEAKNESS WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD AND HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Every option in our kitchen is a whole, healthy, beautiful food. So our cravings are always a celebration and eating is a delight.

    MY TOP TIP FOR:

Improving your diet is… Go fresh and get real! Eat only fresh, real food. Nothing processed.

Staying healthy while travelling is… Take your own supplies and preplan. Our supplies always include a shower filter too. Arrive at your destination already knowing where you can get organic food and spring water. Check out findaspring.com

Detoxing is… Avoid toxifying the body with chemical products and processed food to start with. And, make excellent health choices every day to activate the innate intelligence of the body that expertly filters out and eliminates toxins.

Immunising is… Playing and bathing in the sunshine!  The sun feeds and lubricates our cells with vitamin D, which mediates our immune responses and boosts our protection against pathogens. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

WHAT’S THE NICEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER SAID TO YOU?

“Mom, you are like no other mother. I love you like a celebration.” (My Son)

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED?

I would like my legacy to be a life of love. Love is my motivating force and my intuition’s source.

IF YOU GOT TO KEEP ONLY 3 OF YOUR BELONGINGS: 1 THING FROM YOUR KITCHEN, 1 THING FROM YOUR GARDEN AND 1 THING FROM YOUR BOOKSHELF- WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

A few years ago our house burned to the ground in the middle of the night. My family escaped safely, but we lost everything in the fire. Everything in our house had to be re-gathered, and I feel less attached to things… Though maybe that is dodging the question…

    1. From my kitchen, I would take our go-to large, sharp knife that we use in preparing every meal.

    2. I would dig up the bountiful blackberry bramble from my garden to take with me.

    3. There is a beautiful edition of The Flower Adornment Sutras on our bookshelf.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY FOR 3 GUESTS (DEAD OR ALIVE)- WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU SERVE?

I am a poet at heart, so if I had to choose three guests for a dinner party tonight, I’d pick three Sufi poets: Rumi, Attar of Nishapur, and Lalla Ded. We would feast on dates, oranges, and mead.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THAT LIFE IS BETTER RAW (OR WITH MORE PLANTS IN YOUR DIET)?

The first and best reasons to eat more plants is that they are a treat for your taste buds and a plate full of fruit and veggies looks like a painting on a plate. Beautiful!

Also, over the last few years, scientific researchers have demonstrated repeatedly that our whole body health, and even our happiness, relies on a diverse population of microbes in our gut. These friendly flora thrive when fed a diet rich in oligosaccharides.  This prebiotic is found in an incredible variety of plant foods, such as artichokes, asparagus, beets, beans, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, fennel, garlic, Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, leeks, lentils, okra, onion, peas, shallots, apples, persimmon, pumpkin, and watermelon.

Nadine shares her favourite raw food recipe…

    CHOCOLATE BLUEBERRY CREPES

    Raw Blueberry Crepes 2

    What you’ll need:

2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)

½ cup ground chia (sprouted ground chia is the best)/or fresh ground flax seed

1 cup tocotrienols (rice bran solubles)

    3 drops lemon essential oil

    To make:

Mix all of the ingredients in a food processor.

Spread out like a pancake on a dehydrator tray and dehydrate over night.

Wake up and dress your pancake.

Roll raw chocolate into the pancake, almond butter icing, or a nut cheese. Whatever takes your fancy!

    Yum!

How to detox at home - starting at no cost to kinda expensive

How to detox at home - starting at no cost to kinda expensive

    Happy New Year, you guys!

I don’t know about you, but something tells me that this year is bound to be truly magical.

After working with many of you over the course of last year and after reflecting back on 2015, I know energetically it’s been a tough one for many. Even as you’ve welcomed brand new digits full of hope and desires, some of us still had ‘debts’ left to pay and found ourselves weak, sick, irritable, achy or disappointed during this first week of 2016 or perhaps losing material but sentimental things, which is also the universe’s way of encouraging you to leave stuff behind.

You may have started with good intentions, but now feeling like you have already let yourself down within days, so I’m here to remind you that you’re OK…

Actually this first week of a new year is more of a transition week, sorta like doing a cleanse and experiencing all kinds of awful detox symptoms before feeling and seeing the benefits.

It’s a week to be kind to yourself and to spend time setting your intentions not just for the start of the year, but for all of it.

It’s a week to explore all of your options. A week to make wishes. A week to day dream and to plan. And only if this plan involves a good and effective detox to clear out the bad and begin with the new, then read on.

Below you will find various detoxing options which I’ve categorised in order of cost, starting from ideas that cost nothing at all…

    7 DAY DETOX PLAN // £15

    purified-cover

The first eBook that I ever launched came as a result of designing over 100 individual detox programs. After working with so many different clients, there emerged an undeniable pattern of ingredients and food combinations that encouraged toxic release from the body. Many that do this plan end up enjoying the changes and energy levels so much that they continue for another 7 days, which I provide as a bonus within this downloadable guide.

If you’ve been following Better Raw for a while, you’ll know that I never share anything I haven’t had first hand experience with and that I don’t wholeheartedly believe in. I enrolled at IIN (Institute for Integrative Nutrition) for their world class health coaching program because it’s been highly recommended to me and I knew that I could study part-time and online. What I didn’t know was how much impact it would have on my life, health and career. Every single lecturer is the best in their field and the course focuses just as much on how to be an effective coach (to others and to yourself) as it does on nutrition and bio-individuality. There is no one diet, exercise or detox that fits all, but becoming well informed about my choices, I was able to make smart decisions that lead me to opening Tanya’s cafes, securing a book deal with Hay House, getting pregnant easily and sharing my knowledge and vibrant health with others. Call +1(877)-733-1520 and mention my name (Tanya Maher) to save upto 25% or try out a free class>>

Master of the Month | Liana Werner-Gray | Classic Cashew Cheesecake with Almond Crust

Master of the Month | Liana Werner-Gray | Classic Cashew Cheesecake with Almond Crust

I'd like to think that I don't do the bias thing when it comes to choosing a Master of The Month for the most festive, sparkly, happy, inspirational and love-packed season of the year and then...

I meet a fellow Antipodean, same age as me, who also happens to be a best selling Hay House author, has a weekly radio show, lives in one of my favourite cities in the whole entire world - New York, has a hell of a health transformation story and she's drop dead gorgeous!

Liana Werner-Gray from The Earth Diet, made quite an impression.

She recently interviewed me on everything healthy, fun and alkaline for her Hay House US Radio show (available to listen here) and I was so excited to carry on the conversation, this time all about Liana, right here on the blog...

Meet our December's Master of the Month...

Liana Werner-Gray, Biography Photos, NYC, 9/18/2013

DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL DAY OF EATING AND DRINKING.

I do “The Earth Diet”. Custom made to my lifestyle is 70% raw foods and 30% cooked foods. I do incorporate some meat here and there, but I am a majority plant based/vegan including my skin care products, household products and clothing!

After rising: I usually start the day with lemon water or apple cider vinegar. Sometimes I do oil pulling with sesame seed oil.
Breakfast: I love chia seed cereal with sliced tigernuts and hemp seeds as a topping! Then I have one fresh vegetable juice everyday. My favourite is cucumber, celery, kale, parsley, lemon and ginger – just pure goodness!
Supplements: I usually take 2 supplements throughout the day: bentonite clay and activated charcoal. Snacks: I will eat as much raw whole foods as possible like avocado or straight up cauliflower. I always get my whole raw greens in everyday like a salad or at least a Phresh Greens which is just mixing the powder into water for an instant serving of daily greens!
Lunch and Dinner: I usually have one cooked meal a day. Usually a recipe from my book like the Cumin Quinoa, vegan Mac n Cheese (gluten free using brown rice pasta) or Tacos. Everything I eat is as natural as possible that comes straight from nature.
Desserts and treats: I have something sweet every single day, whether it is a piece of fruit, or organic candy, or a Raw Chocolate Almond Butter cup – which is why I created my own raw chocolate line so that I could eat it everyday! :p I used to be addicted to the worst kind of chocolate with refined sugar, soy and dairy, and I broke my binge eating cycle by replacing it with raw chocolate that gives me so many antioxidants, nourishment and protein!

WHAT (OR WHO) INSPIRES YOU TO EAT WELL AND STAY HEALTHY?

The “feeling” good is what keeps me wanting to stay healthy. I spent way too many years (5 years in total) of intense suffering every single day around food. I had an addiction to junk foods and I would binge eat, emotional eat and over eat. I so badly wanted to break out of that vicious cycle and feel better, and I achieved that with doing 365 days of eating only from nature (documented daily at www.TheEarthDiet.blogspot.com) and now I am so grateful to have relief and freedom around food. Now I actually enjoy food and I don’t even crave junk foods at all which amazes me. I love how I feel now and so I want to maintain this peace, harmony and health that I experience.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST WEAKNESS WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD AND HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

When I get emotional, stressed or tired I crave a lot of sweets and carbs and then I usually over eat on them. They are all organic though so I don’t get trapped in it for long. I tell myself the affirmation “It is better than eating a whole lot of junk food, and still a major upgrade from my past habits”. However I am aware of it, and I have set an intention to break out of the habit of over eating when I am emotional. I am choosing instead to replace it with other things like asking God for help, breathing and just being ok with feeling uncomfortable emotions knowing that they will pass soon.

I also eat handfuls of TigerNuts when I am craving or feel like I am about to overeat, because they are a root vegetable so there is no guilt attached to eating vegetables haha, plus they are mostly fibre so they fill me up, but don’t have crazy amounts of calories. Plus they have the same amount of iron as red meat so it makes me feel strong. Also when I crave candy like gummy bears, I will go get organic gummy bears and allow myself to enjoy them as it’s a major upgrade from eating corn syrup candy that is full of gluten!

    MY TOP TIP FOR:

Improving your diet is… focus on what nature/God provides us with! The Earth has it all there for us – just eat as many whole foods that come directly from nature as possible!

Staying healthy while travelling is… always carry raw chocolate or your favorite superfoods!

Detoxing is… drink bentonite clay daily. It will absorb toxins, parasites, worms and heavy metals. It is volcanic ash.

Immunising is… drink beet juice and green juice every single. It will literally transform the body!

Beauty is… whiten your teeth with baking soda! No need for harsh chemical whiteners these days. Baking soda costs just a few dollars and comes straight from earth. After you brush your teeth with toothpaste, scoop a nice amount of baking soda up on your toothbrush and then buff your teeth clean with it. Do daily for 14 days and you will notice a new shade of whiteness to your teeth! Stop and take a break if it stings.

WHAT’S THE NICEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER SAID TO YOU?

One of my clients who came through my one-on-one health coaching, Monica Rowsom said, “I could not have done this without you, I don’t know how I could ever repay you. Thank you for having the confidence in me that I could lose weight and improve my thyroid condition when doctors told me I would never be able to lose weight. Now I have lost 38 pounds and feel the best I have ever felt. Thank you.”

And the people who I have helped with cancer are dear to my heart, like Marie Wellens “Liana your book is awesome and I feel so blessed to have it. It has helped with many physical problems including cancer and emphysema. Everyone should have your book at their fingertips.”

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED?

For founding The Earth Diet and helping people achieve their healthiest and happiest life possible.

IF YOU GOT TO KEEP ONLY 3 OF YOUR BELONGINGS: 1 THING FROM YOUR KITCHEN, 1 THING FROM YOUR GARDEN AND 1 THING FROM YOUR BOOKSHELF- WHAT WOULD THEY BE?

    Kitchen: Vitamix

    Garden: Cilantro (Coriander)

Bookshelf: My Louise Hay Daily Affirmations calendar

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY FOR 3 GUESTS (DEAD OR ALIVE)- WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHAT WOULD YOU SERVE?

    1) Walt Disney – my Cashew Cheesecake recipe

    2) Oprah – my Gluten Free Chicken Nugget recipe with a coating of almond flour, turmeric and real salt

    3) Eckhart Tolle – Earth Diet Burritos

Can I invite more? LOL! Katy Perry – my candy recipe and raw cookie dough!

Selena Gomez – tea and cookies, and tacos

Mother Teresa – my Turmeric Rice recipe

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THAT LIFE IS BETTER RAW?

Because raw foods provide us with high high high amounts of nutrition and most of us are nutritionally deprived. Raw foods help our spirituality, they connect us with nature and help us to live in harmony. Raw foods also cure eating disorders like binge eating, emotional eating and overeating. We can heal our mind, body and spirit using raw foods – no joke! And it’s extremely hard to binge eat and overeat on raw foods because they are so nutrient rich! It’s easier to overeat on junk processed foods because they are empty and our digestive system sends a message to the brain “Didn’t get real food, need nutrients, send more food please!” and hence we are left feeling so so hungry after eating huge amounts of junk food. Raw foods fill our cells with nothing but wholeness!

Our Master of The Month shares her favourite recipe…

CLASSIC CASHEW CHEESECAKE WITH ALMOND CRUST
Prep time: 25 minutes (+ 3 hours to soak nuts)
    Freezer time: 4 hours
    Makes 16 slices
    Earth Diet Classic Cashew Cheesecake

    INGREDIENTS:

    For the Base

    4 cups almond meal

5 tablespoons maple syrup (or raw honey)

    1 tablespoon coconut oil

    For the Cheesecake Filling

½ cup lemon juice (approximately 2 large lemons)

3 cups of cashew nuts, soaked in water for 3 hours to soften

    ¾ cup maple syrup

    ¾ cup coconut oil

1 table spoons pure vanilla extract

    1/8 teaspoon salt

    ACTION:

    1. Make the base. In a bowl, combine the almond meal, maple syrup (or honey), and coconut oil. The mixture should be dry, but moist enough to hold together. Add a little water if the mixture is too dry.
